How does Azure Application Firewall work?

Azure Application Firewall is an intelligent, cloud-native network firewall security service that provides you with best-in-class threat protection for cloud workloads running on Azure. It is a fully stateful firewall-as-a-service that incorporates high availability and scalability in the cloud without restrictions. It also provides the option to perform east-west and north-south traffic inspection.

Azure Firewall is offered in two SKUs: Standard and Premium.

Azure Firewall Premium

It provides advanced functionality including signature-based IDPS to enable rapid detection of attacks by looking for specific patterns. Categories of security vulnerabilities include malware, phishing, coin mining, and Trojan attacks.

Azure Firewall Standard

It provides threat intelligence feeds and L3-L7 filtering directly from Microsoft Cyber Security. Threat intelligence-based filtering can send alerts and deny traffic to or from malicious domains and IP addresses that are known and updated in real time to protect against new and emerging attacks.

Azure Firewall Manager

You can use Azure Firewall Manager to centrally manage Azure Firewall instances across multiple subscriptions. Firewall Manager leverages firewall policy to apply a common set of network or application rules and settings to tenant firewalls.

Why use Azure WAF?

Nowadays web applications are increasingly used as a target for malicious attacks by external threats, thanks to Azure Web Application Firewall you can prevent attacks on your systems without modifying them.
